The first time I listened to "Large" by Taken By Trees was in headphones on an airplane. The engine's drone drowned out a lot of the details of the track. It wasn't ideal. Listening to it again now, it feels almost perfect. Over the years, Sweden's been home to a lot of artists that push the boundaries of pop music by welcoming it with open arms. Whether it's Studio’s weeded-out tropical jams or The Tough Alliance’s confrontational but pristine compositions (it should also be noted that TTA's Henning Fürst contributed quite a bit to Taken By Trees' upcoming Other Worlds), there's a certain laid back, anything goes quality to this music. Here, we get chintzy digital dub, that clatters and tinkers along until a huge swath of weeping swings takes everything over. It sounds homemade up until that point, and then it becomes downright theatrical.
