Video: Kirin J Callinan, “Embracism”

May 07, 2013

There's a philosophic narrative running through the new video from Australian industrial crooner Kirin J Callinan and it's apparent as soon as Callinan lets out a gross grunt in the midst of his morning shower-and-shave ritual: the things we put ourselves through just to be presentable, just in hopes of finding a mate and a job and money in the bank, very often suck. Over a Suicide-esque beat and chants of Look your best and You gotta prove yourself, the video shows Callinan naked as the day he was born trying to punch himself into to assembling a life—hitting his gag reflex with his toothbrush, cutting his beard until he's raw, lifting weights to get veiny muscles, until all it collapses into some kind of digital-era take on American Psycho. Dark times, especially beguiling because Callinan has so much to celebrate: a debut album Embracism will be out on July 2 and he's got some tour dates this summer alone and as support for Ariel Pink, which you can check out below.
