NYFW Trend Report: Bucket Hats

September 08, 2013

FADER NYFW, Spring 2014

Earl Sweatshirt brought it back, and Schoolboy Q and Kid Cudi followed. Thanks to a bevy of hip-hop artists and designers’ renewed interest in ‘90s trends (see: Saint Laurent’s recent grunge and Céline’s minimalism), the bucket hat has graduated from a regrettable moment of the pre2k decade to a modern topper. Come next spring, expect to see variations from Shades of Grey By Micah Cohen, Michael Bastian, and Gypsy Sport. There wasn’t a wink of irony in Shades of Grey’s sporty sleek interpretation. Likewise, Bastian fully committed to a Hunter S. Thompson-referencing look, pairing theirs with yellow-tinted aviators, a leopard utility jacket, and a retro briefcase. Gypsy Sport, pictured above, went with a two-is-better-than-one approach, sending their model down the runway with a denim one up top, finished with belt loops and a contrast brim, and a ruffled one hanging above his knee. Now would be a good time to dust off the one buried deep in your closet—or hang tight till these collections hit stores next February.
