St. Paul, Minnesota's Psymun has been weaving dreamy instrumentals for Spooky Black and Allan Kingdom all summer as one quarter of thestand4rd--it was his Pink Label EP that really got us hip to the group's inventive new sound. "Animal Kingdom" really kicks in around halfway through: a buzzy, somewhat Dilla-derivative breakbeat bursts open into a glittering guitar line punctuated by perfectly rounded kicks and ambient baby harmonies. It's the kind of beat Spooky would kill--if we could, we'd lop this joint in half, but it may just be the overcast skies that has us skipping to its brighter end.
