PC Worship Made a Video In A Hotel Room At The Ace

PC Worship is contemporary art-punk at its finest, like a grunge-punk version of the Velvet Underground. This video for "Behind the Picture," "Hawl," and "Baby in the Backroom"—all tracks from the group's recent full-length, Social Rust—is a trip, layering together footage from a recent night-long artist's residency at the Ace Hotel in New York in the way the band layers its sounds. In it, we follow a handful of young people up a stairwell and into a hotel room, where they start engaging in some orgiastic group ritual. Someone makes a bed of pillows; another starts playing a violin. There are psychedelic patterns are projected onto the crew, and then layers of video on top of that. The dizzying effect is somewhat akin to the early video art experiments of folks like Wolf Vostell and Nam June Paik.

Describing the evening of the residence, leader singer Justin Frye told The FADER that he "spent the evening with a core group of performance artists and friends constructing a series of experimental films based on the transformation of systemic luxury and the throws of hospitality culture. Filmed on VHS with regard to 16mm in-camera experimentalism, the films are meant to deploy the ideas of saturated individuality and how they converge in proximity within the walls of Hotels, a concept typically removed from the experience of privacy and isolation."
