Sweden’s The Mary Onettes Premieres “Ruins,” A Familiar-Feeling Duet

It features striking guest vocals from Selebrities’ Maria Usbeck.

On The Mary Onettes' latest missive, "Ruin," the '80s-referencing Swedish band takes you to a hazy, familiar dreamland. The swirling voices of the band's Philip Ekström and the track's guest vocalist, Selebrities' Maria Usbeck, compliment each other beautifully here. Apparently, the track—originally recorded for a Swedish film director—almost didn't have singing on it at all. "I felt it was lacking something, so I recorded vocals," Ekström told FADER over email. "Suddenly, a pop song was built. Almost immediately I wanted a female voice on it, and Cascine helped us out by finding Maria from Selebrities. Her beautiful, wobbly voice made the song complete." Agreed!
