FADER Mix: Samo Sound Boy

Four hours of the deepest cuts of dreamy club music and more from L.A.’s preeminent dance freak.

April 23, 2015

If you've been looking to go deep down the house music rabbit hole, Samo Sound Boy has got you covered. The mix the L.A. producer has generously shared with us is—no joke—four hours long. And why not? It's to celebrate the release of his forthcoming debut solo album, Begging Please, after all. Listen to his dreamy mix below, featuring Caribou, Frank Ocean, and The Knife amongst others, and scroll down for a chat with him about Baltimore club music and paella. Look out for the release of Begging Please on Body High this April 28th.

Where are you right now? Please describe your surroundings. I'm at my studio in L.A. which is a few blocks east of MacArthur Park. I have some old synths and drum machines in here as well as the CDJs i used to record this mix. It's almost 11 p.m. and I have the window open. I can hear the people who rent the 1st floor of the building standing outside. They have this small textile business that makes suits and dresses for little kids and they work late every night.

Tell us a bit about this mix—first of all, it's four hours long?! Did you record in one take? This mix is all live. Just me DJing at our studio all afternoon. Honestly, I set out to do it all in one take but I did have to stop once about 3 hours in because my friend came by to drop off these records I'd loaned him. The last 6-7 months while I was working on my album I had been listening to a lot of non house music. Stuff like Prince, Depeche Mode, and Francis and The Lights. With this mix I wanted to dive back in to the dance music I love. That raw and ethereal house sound. The tracks that really go but are almost a bit psychedelic at the same time.

Secondly, what do you imagine people doing while listening to this mix? Experimenting over the summer.

What was the seed for your album, Begging Please? Falling in love and falling out of love.

When and how did you first get the dance music bug? When I first heard Baltimore club in middle school. A friend who moved from Maryland showed me a mixtape with all the classic stuff like "Watch Out For The Big Girl" and "Mr. Postman." I thought it was the most exciting music I had ever heard.

And finally, what's your favorite dish to cook and how do you make it? I'm a really terrible cook but I want to get better eventually. I think that's going to be my thing when I'm an old guy. I was inspired when we were on tour in Europe and Jerome and I visited his grandfather who lives by the beach in France. He made us this paella that was unreal. He bought all this fresh seafood in the morning and then cooked it outside all day over a stove in the yard.
