This Genius Sampled 153 Songs Into A Rapid-Fire, Hyper-Pop Fever Dream

In the tradition of Madeon's legendary "Pop Culture" mashup, here comes 20-year-old Californian producer Shawn Wasabi to raise the bar. In Madeon's 2011 clip, which will hit 30 million views any minute now, the French producer dropped 39 songs. That used to be something. Wasabi's live performance of "Marble Soda" contains pieces of 153 different tracks—roughly one new sample per second. It's out of control and it sounds gorgeous, all the way up to the tiny blips of Porter Robinson to close out the set. Honestly, music is insane.

Shawn Wasabi's controller is a custom rig called the Midi Fighter 64, built by a guy at Google named Michael Mitchell, according to a recent interview. The software is Ableton Live 9, and the way it works is: there are 64 buttons on this thing. The button on the bottom left cycles through sound banks, sort of like folders, and the four buttons on the bottom right select different sub-folders. (Until he spins the whole thing around at the climax.) The remaining dozens of buttons are individual samples—the kicks, Big Sean yells, and clicks—dependent on which folder's selected. He must have a really good memory. Right now, Shawn Wasabi's is the only Midi Fighter 64 in existence, but you can sign a Change.org petition to beg its creator to make more.
