Mat Cothran's got an affinity for championing unknowns: the South Carolina artist, who's one-half of Elvis Depressedly, was an early and vocal supporter of destined-for-greatness Pennsylvania songwriter Alex G. Lately he's been tweeting about Katie Dey, a Melbourne-based solo artist he "met" on Tumblr who has a single BandCamp release to her name: a seven-track collection of screwed up pop songs called asdfasdf. With gorgeously muffled melodies, rickety laptop beats, and an unsteady ambience built on layers of organic and digital sounds, Dey's detail-oriented productions teeter gloriously between heart-swelling emotion and something more unsettling. It's hard to classify, yeah, but it's even harder to stop listening to.
