In a New York Times profile preceding the roll-out of Apple Music, Zane Lowe revealed the names of several famous artists who will be hosting their own special Beats 1 shows. Apple drew mostly from the worlds of rock and rap: Pharrell, Drake, Elton John, Queens Of The Stone Age’s Josh Homme, and Dr. Dre. Disclosure will bring a dance pulse to the proceedings. St. Vincent was the only female artist-show-runner mentioned in the article. The biggest outlier is Jaden Smith, but he has by far the most engaging social media presence of any of the hosts, so maybe he can get the youth into radio.
The article suggests that the Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor came up with the idea for Beats 1. “I wondered if in today’s world there is still a place for monoculture,” Reznor told The Times. “Can that still exist?”
