An interest in Kanye West has incited an array of behaviors. In one such case, it lead to secretly taping a SWISH listening party. In the case of Herbert Lui, Kanye fandom inspired him to create The World According To Kanye, a 200+ page book that pairs quotes from the rapper with original illustrations.
Lui runs Wonder Shuttle, which "build[s] businesses and brands through content marketing and strategy." But he also writes and is devoted to "r/hiphopheads and KTT." The World According To Kanye allowed Lui to combine these passions. One particular conversation between the rapper and Zane Lowe served as a jumping-off point: "Go listen to all my music, it's the codes of self-esteem," Kanye told Lowe in 2013. "It's the codes of who you are. If you're a Kanye West fan, you’re not a fan of me. You're a fan of yourself. You will believe in yourself. I'm just the espresso. I'm just the shot in the morning to get you going, to make you believe that you can overcome that situation that you're dealing with all the time."
When designers from pxl fctry—Sean Ho Lung, Crystal Chen, and Warren Kong—reached out to Lui earlier this year to collaborate, he floated the idea of a Kanye book. The group, Lui told The FADER, "wanted to share a more complete image of Kanye—including the insightful, inspiring, side of him, but also the ambitious, funny, sad, angry, and cheerful sides of him as well." Cornelia Baptista and Jerry Zoumis also played key roles in the project.
