Shoegazey duo Dirty Dishes are recent transplants from L.A. to Brooklyn, where they're beginning their fall tour with Exploding In Sound label-mates Stove. Dirty Dishes' full length debut album Guilty was released earlier this year, and today The FADER is premiering the eerie video for their fiery single "Red Roulette."
The video is a mashup of found footage and shots of the duo. "Red Roulette" is highly reminiscent of the '90s alt rock sound (think: Hole, Belly, L7), and the video's tense, DIY Hitchcockian aura is a reflection of that. As Dirty Dishes explained to The FADER over email: "There’s kind of a sub story that the creepy women are doing all of this stuff in attempt to make themselves look beautiful, meanwhile the object of their affection has left them and is partying on a beach somewhere. So naturally we decided to make his plane crash on the way back."
Their decision to use old footage to create a plot line for their music video is concordant with the track's calmly angry vibe. It's kind of like a bitter, backwards "Leaving On A Jet Plane"—now you're gone and you're not ever gonna come around, and yeah he's gonna leave his girl behind, they sing.
Dirty Dishes continued, "Our minds were kind of one the whole 'what happens after you die' kick, so we thought it would be super funny and twisted to imagine how horrifying it would be if instead of people seeing God or whatever it was just seeing a bunch of tripped out images of us playing weird music in the clouds."
