Icelandic Singer-Songwriter Sóley’s “Don’t Ever Listen” Is A Must-Listen

The intimate song was written and recorded one lonely night, and features a feline cameo.

Icelandic artist Sóley has released two albums that move in the murky spaces between folk, electronic music, and pop to create heady atmospheres. But her latest EP is her most intimate outing yet—in particular, the haunting title track, premiering below. With a candid, close-up recording style and frankly written, softly sung lyrics like How is it to sit in the dark? Will you ever see the light?, "Don't Ever Listen" captures solitude with an intensity reminiscent of Portland artist Grouper.

"I wrote and recorded ‘Don't Ever Listen' one evening three years ago with my computer's microphone when I had just moved in to a new apartment," Sóley told The FADER over email. "I also just got a cat at that time so it's running around and 'meow-ing' on the recording. I wanted to capture the moment when I have to stop listening to my mind." See Sóley's tour dates below, and get the Don’t Ever Listen EP on October 30 via Berlin label Morr Music.
