DJ Clent Breathes Fresh Life Into A Chipmunk Soul Sample On “So True”

The Beatdown House producer drops a Big Sean- and Chris Brown-inspired track.

November 04, 2015

There are myriad ways to turn a party out, but one of the best is to flip a sample from a lesser-known cut and breathe fresh life into it. Such is the case with Chicago footwork producer DJ Clent's latest track, "So True," which was "inspired by a mix by Big Sean and Chris Brown called 'Play No Games,'" as Clent told The FADER. Both tracks sample Guy's 1988 single "Piece Of My Love," only on Clent's re-imagining the chipmunk soul sits atop a clash of drums and synths that pulse and pound in contrast with the smooth, soulful croon. Hold out until the tempo flips at 1:50, if you don't believe me.

According to Clent, the track will "probably" appear on his forthcoming California EP. In the meantime, Clent and T-Rell will be representing their Chicago-based Beatdown House footwork crew at their upcoming compilation release party with Teklife's Tripletrain and more at Trans-Pecos in Brooklyn on November 14th.
