Garage-pop band Peach Kelli Pop has just released title track “Halloween Mask” from their upcoming album. The L.A.-based project is the brainchild of Allie Hanlon, founder and primary songwriter, and has become an all-female 5-piece live band bringing Hanlon's lo-fi power pop to life. “Halloween Mask” is the fun, yet somewhat creepy tune that explores a more troubling reality beyond catchy guitar riffs and candied vocals: the harsh expectations placed on women to be physically desirable.
“The pressure to achieve phantasmic, idealistic external beauty is unrelenting and irritating in my every day life,” Hanlon told The FADER over email. “It is also about knowing that achieving these ideals guarantees no deeper levels of happiness, satisfaction or fulfillment.” The track is clever in its simplicity, repeating lines like Halloween mask, beneath my skin is grey that stick inside your head.
Listen to the song below, and keep an eye out for their forthcoming 7" due April 29 via Lauren Records (preorder here), as well as their North American tour.
