I don't know whaaaaaat the fuuuuck ODWALLA88 are doing, but it's working. In a nutshell, the L.A. duo of Chloe Maratta and Flannery Silva make music by speaking aggressively over sparse, atonal samples, like a cut-off clip of a morose-sounding ice cream truck or one of them purring, as the do here on "Purr Hi," the A-side of their first-ever 7-inch. Released via Juiceboxxx's Thunder Zone and available in select shops, the single comes with a stunningly pretty B-side: a remix by none other than Lil Ugly Mane.
"Ugly Mane sent us an unsolicited remix that we loved," the duo said over email to The FADER. Where their stuff often skews toward straight-up not-music, he finds structures amid chaos and creates a jazzy flip that's downright pretty. As Thunder Zone founder Juiceboxxx put it to me, "The fact that Ugly Mane did a remix pushes it into that Grand Royal Beastie Boys remixing Bikini Kill kind of cultural jam zone." It only further legitimizes every visionary involved.
Hear both tracks in the above video, directed by ODWALLA88's friend Chiclittlefoot. If you're in Miami, check them out this Friday at the Sex Magazine book preview.
