Last night, Mariah Carey was set to perform on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve With Ryan Seacrest minutes before the New Year's ball dropped in Times Square. However, the singer encountered technical difficulties that caused her three-song set to go awry.

After a performance of "Auld Lang Syne," Mariah was caught off-guard by hearing the intro to her hit "Emotion," and begrudgingly told her back-up singers to "walk [her] down" through the microphone. "We didn’t have a check for this song, so we’ll just say it went to number one," Mariah said, clearly miffed. After attempting to join in on the vocal, Mariah eventually gave up, asking the sound technicians to "put these monitors on, please."

According to Billboard, Mariah Carey was unable to undergo a proper sound-check for the performance and couldn't hear through her in-ear monitor, resulting in the awkward performance. However, viewers had no mercy for the singer, as they began to crucify her on Twitter for her lip-sync bungle. Later on in the night, Mariah Carey responded with a gif of herself, claiming that "shit happens." View the best reactions and Mariah's response below.
