After performing at a Trump inauguration event, Chrisette Michele has released "No Political Genius," a spoken-word track which addresses the controversy surrounding her performance at the Liberty Ball. “I am the black song Spike Lee won’t sing/I am the black voice inauguration bells ring,” Michele begins the song. Following the announcement of Michele's performance, Spike Lee said that he wouldn't include the singer's music in his upcoming Netflix series, Black Girl Magic.

In another lyric from the track, Michele addresses past collaborator Questlove, who also criticized her decision to perform: "For John Lewis and Ben Carson/Questlove, Spike Lee, and before them/I won’t divide now/That’s not smart now/God before me, I won’t back down/This is my damn America now."
