Radio Stations Are Now Being Hacked To Play “Fuck Donald Trump” Over And Over
YG and Nipsey Hussle’s track has been illegally inserted into airwaves across the USA.
A hacking reportedly occurred Monday on Sunny 107.9, a radio station in South, South Carolina. President and majority shareholder Frank Patterson addressed the matter in a since-deleted Facebook post captured by Buzzfeed: “This is NOT our broadcast!” he wrote. “We at WFBS do not take political views! The FCC and WFBS are working to fix this situation ASAP.”
A number of small radio stations were hacked and played the explicit song on January 20, the day of Trump's inauguration. An oldies station in San Angelo, Texas; El Jefe 96.7 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Mother of the Redeemer Radio 103.5 in Evansville, Indiana; and Crescent Hill Radio in Louisville, Kentucky all played the song as well.
According to Radio Insight, the as-yet unidentified perpetrators gained access through a device called a Barix Exstreamer, an unsecured audio transmitter used by each of the affected stations. The company's founder Johannes Rietschel told BuzzFeed that the Exstreamer is not meant to be connected to the internet, "something he compared to leaving a door unlocked." Such unsecured instruments can be located with a special search engine.
“With significant interest to take over the devices for political messages or even blackmailing, there will be more takeovers and maybe even ‘hacks,’” Rietschel said.
If you haven't tuned into your local terrestrial radio station recently, now would be a good time to see what's playing.
