L.A. singer Niia is back today with a video for “Hurt You First,” off her long-awaited debut album I. In the Sasha Samsonova-directed clip, multiple Niias are trapped in anguish together as they sing about getting back at a lover. There's a surprise twist at the end that leaves lots of questions about who is really in control.

Over email, Niia explained the meaning behind the emotional song.

“"Hurt You First" is about protecting yourself in a relationship," she said. "I don't want to get hurt — so I'm going to HURT YOU FIRST. It came from a personal place when I realized it's hard for me to just let things play out... especially when it feels too good to be true. I need to control it even if that means messing it up."
