After meeting with Illinois governor Bruce Rauner to discuss the ongoing funding crisis for Chicago Public Schools, Chance the Rapper announced that he would be delivering a press conference on the issue on Monday. Speaking in front of students, teachers, and reporters at Westcott Elementary School, Chance called on businesses and individuals to help the city's schools climb out of $215 million budget gap and said that he would be donating $1 million to arts and enrichment programs for CPS.
The donation, Chance said, was "made possible by the fans," and was funded through ticket sales from his spring tour, support from AEG and Live Nation, and independent venues. Additionally, Chance called on major companies and corporations to lend their financial support to CPS, and said his SocialWorks non-profit organization would donate $10,000 to a specific Chicago school for every $100,000 donated by a company, starting with Westcott Elementary School.
Representative for AEG and Live Nation were not immediately available for comment.
