Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah Blends Sounds Of The Diaspora On “Coronation of X. aTunde Adjuah”

A fervent jazz offering featuring Elena Pinderhughes.

March 29, 2017

Virtuosic trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah speaks to the times on his new song "The Coronation of X. aTunde Adjuah," which features flutist Elena Pinderhughes. It's third single from his forthcoming Ruler Rebel album — the inaugural installment of his poignant centennial trilogy. With the timely project, Adjuah honors the first jazz recording in 1917 and challenges today's sociopolitical climate while stretching, "trap music with West African and Afro-Native American styles," he told The FADER over email. On the track, Adjuah blends sounds of the diaspora as he and Pinderhughes both riff over an instrumental laced with galvanized drums and percussion.

"It's high time that we start looking to illuminate the sameness between people. We've seen what it looks like when we're preoccupied with focusing on whats different," he explained. "I've always held the notion that if I can create an artistic space or moment that marries the cultural expression (genre) of seemingly disparate peoples, it will help to show that ultimately we all belong together. Let's not be the generation that repeats these tropes. Let's be the ones who get it right."
