Ani DiFranco Debuts The Video For Her Politically-Charged “Binary”

Watch the folk legend and queer feminist icon dance in this visual from her new album.

June 12, 2017

Folk-pop legend and feminist queer activist icon Ani DiFranco has a new album out. Today, she's debuting a new video for the record's funky title track, "Binary," directed by Matt Mahurin, who's pretty renowned for his hazy, conceptual music videos with Peter Gabriel, INXS, R.E.M., Metallica, and others.

"You gotta complete the circuit," she sings over staccato brass and drums, "Not just with human beings/ With the sky above you/ With the earth beneath your feet." It's just the right dose of classic Ani that we need right now.

In the song's black and white video, Ani dances through literal interpretations of her characteristic metaphorical images, looking a little bit angry but mostly joyful as she lets it all out. “I had a total blast working with Matt on this video," Ani wrote to The FADER over email. "Dancing around in his basement, just me and him. It was very un-L.A.! It is a privilege to work with an artist of his caliber, and I am old and wise enough to just say 'You go! Do your thing!'"
