An image posted to Dove's Facebook page which depicted a black woman using Dove soap and then becoming white has caused the personal hygiene brand to issue a statement that could be considered an apology. The backlash for posting the image was immediate and abundant.
"An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused," read their statement, posted to Twitter.
Dove is a company that has branded itself on supporting women's "real beauty" with campaigns aimed towards body positivity and empowerment. Clearly, these efforts need to be reevaluated in light of post that made it onto their Facebook.
And then...this. From @Dove. “Missed the mark.”
