It's wild that, in 2017, we still have a monarchy here in the U.K. Seriously, every now and then, I am hit with a wave of bemusement that I live in a country that uses £82 million a year of taxpayer money to pay our queen. That's crazy. Still, I couldn't help but have a little smile when today, wildcard Prince Harry announced his engagement to American actress Meghan Markle. Markle, who is divorced, mixed-race, and a star of TV drama Suits, is not your typical British princess. And at a time of nationalist and racist hatred in the U.K. mainstream, seeing a POC join the most rich and powerful establishment in the country feels positive.
If we must have royalty, then Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is the princess the people want. Also, we might get a day off work, which is cool with me.
