Gabrielle Union on sexual misconduct: “I don’t think it’s a coincidence whose pain has been taken seriously”

Her new book, We’re Going to Need More Wine, is out now.

Gabrielle Union's first book, We're Going to Need More Wine, is a best-seller with over 100,000 copies in print, but she still has a hard time finding it on bookshelves. In an interview with the New York Times, the actress turned writer explained that some bookstores would house it in the back, and she found it missing in various airports.

“So I started asking people to tell me what stores this was happening in. You don’t want to alienate booksellers,” she told the Times, “but where’s my book?”

The lack of prominence in bookstores is a blight on what Union otherwise feels is a "revival" of a book tour. At nearly every stop, she told the Times, women would open up to her about their own experiences with sexual assault, which Union discusses in the book. She hopes in particular that her book and activism reach women of color.

“I think the floodgates have opened for white women,” she said. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence whose pain has been taken seriously. Whose pain we have showed historically and continued to show. Whose pain is tolerable and whose pain is intolerable. And whose pain needs to be addressed now.”
