The Umbrella Academy's plot revolves around a family of five mutants who try to solve the mystery of their father's death. Blige is set to play a hitwoman named Cha-Cha, a “ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets,” according to a press release. Gerard Way will serve as the show's co-executive producer.

Mary J. Blige is nominated for two Academy Awards at the 2018 Oscars: Best Supported Actress for her role in Mudbound, and Best Original Song for "Mighty River," also from Mudbound.
