For my middle school's 8th grade talent show, a group of my friends wanted to perform a rendition of Xscape's "My Little Secret," a slinky chronicle of an extramarital affair. Our student government advisor thought it too lewd; looking back, that was probably a fair call. I don't know how much we really understood the subject matter or the innuendo, but we did understand Kandi Burruss's vocal runs.
Many years later, the group is back as Xscap3, with a slightly different line-up. And I'm here not only for the nostalgia, but because they're still making strong, traditionalist R&B, of which I will never tire. "Memory Lane," off the trio's Here For It EP, released this March, is a solid slowburn. Today, its video is premiering on The FADER.
"We wanted this record to take listeners on a ride through the past when passion and love was real, back down 'Memory Lane,'" the group says. "The lyrics — 'The temperature was chilly we were wrapped up, in each other / Boy I really miss those days and I haven't been feeling that way lately' — are inviting."
