Dana Dentata left metal to make empowering rap songs for strippers
A new Highsnobiety interview with the rapper shows how she’s flipping the script on what’s being played in the clubs.
Formerly the frontwoman of an all-woman metal-punk band called Dentata, Dana Dentata released her debut solo album, DANAVI$ION, last month after a few-years-long hiatus, according to a new interview with Highsnobiety. While she was away, she shed her punk-rock shell and emerged with strip club-ready rap songs that are all about empowering women.
“I had been traumatized and was listening to endless male voices tell me that I couldn’t rap and that my vision didn’t make sense,” Dana said to Highsnobiety. “Eventually, all of those negative voices went away. I took some time to crawl out of the ashes and was finally able to create music one hundred percent for myself, which is why my new EP is called DANAVI$ION.”
All 8-tracks on the album were made so girls could dance on stage to songs that weren't about "bitches all up on some rapper," Dana says. With sleek, and dark-sounding trap songs like "Magic Pu$$$y" and "Ride A Cowboy," and their women-centric lyrics, it's clear DANAVI$ION is flipping the script on what'll get played in the clubs.
