Lady Gaga has criticized Donald Trump and suggested that the government is living in an "alternate universe" after an unreleased memo containing plans to change how gender is defined was leaked over the weekend.

The memo, which came from the department for health and human service, was given to the New York Times. Trump's administration has reportedly outlined plans to define a person's gender by the sex listed on their birth certificate "unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence." This could potentially mean transgender and non-binary people would be unable to have their gender recognized in legal terms.

Responding to the report on Monday, Lady Gaga tweeted: "The government may be living in an alternate universe, but we as a society & culture know who we are and know our truth and must stick together and raise our voices so we can educate them about gender identities.

"While today you might feel unheard or unseen, know that this is not the reality of humanity. This is another display of leadership being driven by ignorance." She added the hashtags #TransRightsAreHumanRights and #WontBeErased.
