Rasharn Powell uses his car as a vehicle for exhilaration and social commentary in his "Joyride" video. The song, a distorted R&B slow jam on which the Londoner sings "we don't drive we joyride," plays in the background as he drives around the city joined by his closest friends and loved ones. In a painful reminder of inequality, however, this smooth ride is later interrupted by the flashing of blue lights.
Speaking about the video, Powell told The FADER: "'Joyride' is the marrying of two contrasting worlds, on one side there is love and a lustful journey with a girl you like, and then on the flip, it touches upon police brutality and the position of a black man in society. The lyric ‘Can’t be a black boy in a nice car’ is very real for me.'"
"Joyride" will appear on Powell's new EP Haven, due in April.
