Next month Harkin (a.k.a Katie Harkin who you may recognize from her time in bands including Sleater-Kinney and the excellent Sky Larkin) releases her debut solo record. The self-titled record, recorded alongside Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa and Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak, is a love letter to the north of England, a place Harkin calls home and one whose culture runs thick across its green fields and industrial towns.

Ahead of the album dropping on April 24, Harkin is sharing new song "Up To Speed," a loose and melodic indie rock about feeling lost in new places and understanding the appeal of being unmoored.

Speaking to The FADER via email, Harkin said of the song: "'Up To Speed' is about going nowhere fast. I’ve been on the move for a long time now and I know it’s been something of a coping mechanism. It’s easier to feel like a tourist somewhere you actually are one. It’s about trying to convert a desire to escape into genuine propulsion rather than just a sprint into the void. That’s Jenn yelling “this is my take” at the top of the song, which I kept as it felt very apt."
