Experimental pop duo 100 gecs are kindred spirits with nu-metal icons Linkin Park in at least one important way: both groups shared a full-length project soon after the release of their debut album. Last year, gecs dropped 1000 gecs & The Tree of Clues (its single "Hand Crushed By A Mallet" featuring Fall Out Boy, Craig Owens, and Nicole Dollanganger, was one of our favorite songs of 2020) while Linkin Park followed up their titanic 2000 debut Hybrid Theory with 2002's Reanimation.

It's an interesting bit of trivia to ponder on while you listen to 100 gecs' remix of "One Step Closer," one of Linkin Park's best-known songs. The energy of Linkin Park's original is a rich vein for 100 gecs to tap and combine with their overwhelming maximalism. A decent portion of the original remains — the iconic opening chords are, thankfully, intact — but gecs comet through with their trademark beguiling production flourishes, like death metal vocals pitched down to oblivion and trance-y synths that would make Darude happy.
