Irish musician CMAT is famed for her sense of humor, referring to herself as "the jackass of the Dublin music scene" among other fitting descriptors. In her "2 Wrecked 2 Care" video, premiering above, however, she uses jokes to shine a light on her problems sleeping. Tapping into how stress-related insomnia can completely change your mood, CMAT sings "One hour sleep, I'm the missing link between the living and the dead," over a country pop beat. Anyone who has watched their bedside clock slowly tick its way through the night will surely relate.
The "2 Wrecked 2 Care" video takes the fever dream-like state extreme tiredness can induce as its launching pad. CMAT is the glamorous figure in her bedroom, eye mask on somewhat hopefully. As she sings the song it emerges that she's performing for an animorphic hairbrush and slippers, plus a picture of CMAT's idol Dolly Parton. It's all deeply camp and a lot of fun. Enough to make you need a lie down, in fact.
Speaking to The FADER via email, CMAT said: "I worked out the concept for this video with the director, Avesta, outside a pub one day, and we had a lot of fun because it was basically just the two of us having cocktails and me showing her lots of different pictures of Miss Piggy on my phone. The most recent lockdown got me very into Jim Henson, and I was keen to do something inspired by his late '70s work on The Muppet Show. We also were very inspired by the YouTube show Don’t Hug Me, I’m Scared, which was a viral Tumblr phenomenon when we were both of Tumblr age. (Deep shame lies around there)."
