For some artists, album and song titles can seem like afterthoughts, but the Detroit duo of Drego and Beno use them to communicate directly with their fans. On their 2019 mixtape Meet Us Outer Space, they went crazy with the Auto-Tune. It was like they’d never gotten the chance to play around with it before, their voices practically sounded robotic on some of the tape’s wilder vocal runs. Some of it worked, some of it didn’t. A few months later, they ended up apologizing with Sorry for the Auto Tune, where they went back to their rugged street sound.
Since their prolific 2019, they haven’t dropped too much together. While Drego’s been steadily releasing music by himself, but Beno’s taken a bit of time off. Sorry We Was Trapping, the title of their upcoming album, offers an apology for the slight hiatus. On the project’s title song, they slide over Michigan Meech’s sinister keys with their whispery flows. “I can teach you how to ball just by sitting in the bleachers,” Beno raps. There’s a bit of rust that needs to be shaken off still, but it’s a good reminder of why they were one of the most exciting pairs coming out of Detroit a few years ago.
