Gomez has spoken at length about struggling with mental health throughout her career. In 2014 she was admitted to a mental health facility shortly after being diagnosed with lupus. She later revealed in 2020 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In the trailer she appears to touch on coming to terms with this when she says, “Everything that I have gone through, it’s going to be there. I’m just making it my friend now. I know this is the beginning for me."

Speaking to Elle in 2021, Gomez addressed her various bouts of mental and physical ill health, stating: “My lupus, my kidney transplant, chemotherapy, having a mental illness, going through very public heartbreaks — these were all things that honestly should have taken me down. Every time I went through something, I was like, ‘What else? What else am I going to have to deal with?'”
