Baton Rouge rapper Wakai is gearing up for the release of his sophomore album Some People Scream, Some People Talk with the release of a new single. “Collect Calls,” featuring Chicago rapper femdot. and Orlando-based Ghanian-American artist Flozigg, is just the beginning of the rollout for the follow-up to his well-received 2022 debut, To a Dark Boy.
The Kirti Pandey-produced single features the beatmaker’s distinguishing blend of jazzy keys and space-age synths that create a stellar backdrop for Wakai’s comforting streams of consciousness, as he raps about navigating life’s complexities. femdot. and Flozigg then join in with guidance and encouragement, particularly that which they receive from prayer.
“To heal it must come from a spiritual place, and most times in my life I’ve felt this source to a higher power almost resembles a call,” Wakai explained to The FADER. “Like my uncle in prison, I find myself calling to that higher source frequently, sometimes a response comes, and sometimes it doesn’t. But the strength comes from having the courage to still keep calling.”
Some People Scream, Some People Talk is slated to arrive this July. In the meantime, watch the official music video for “Collect Calls” below.
