In a Pitchfork documentary filmed nearly 10 years ago, Mac DeMarco shared his appreciation for the Ital disco singer Ryan Paris and his global 1983 hit "Dolce Vita." Paris responded by extending an invitation to DeMarco to rerecord the song; DeMarco got back to him in a 2016 video and seemed excited by the prospect of working together.
Now, at the tail end of 2023, DeMarco and Paris have finally joined forces. It's not for a rerecording of "Dolce Vita," but for a brand new song called "Simply Paradise." Rather than jump back into Ital disco, the singers try a little bit of bittersweet crushed velvet R&B. Mac takes the role of the passionate romantic looking for a soul mate, Paris is the nightclub cruiser, and they trade off lines in a "The Girl Is Mine" type fashion.
