Police in Nigeria have detained Naira Marley following the death of MohBad in Lagos last month, The Guardian and BBC News report. MohBad, a rising star in the Afrobeats scene, died at age 27 on September 12. Prior to his death, the cause of which is unknown, MohBad alleged that Marley had assaulted him and made threats against his life.

The pair's relationship is believed to have deteriorated after MohBad left the Marlian Music Label, which is owned by Marley. Prior to his death, MohBad sent a petition to the police, claiming harassment and that the label had refused to pay him his royalties.

On Tuesday, Lagos state police confirmed that they had taken Marley into custody as they continue their investigation into MohBad’s death. Marley has previously denied any involvement in his death and shared a message on Twitter in which he said was prepared to cooperate "with hopes for the truth to be uncovered and for justice to prevail." He added, “It’s important I do my part for Imole," referring to MohBad by another name.

MohBad's death has caused confusion and protest in his home country and abroad, with marches taking place in both Lagos and London demanding justice for the late artist.

The Afrobeats artist behind songs such as "Ask About Me" and "Peace" died in a hospital after being admitted with an ear infection. Police subsequently exhumed his body to conduct an autopsy, the results of which are likely to be produced later this month when the coroner's inquest resumes on October 13.
