yeule, the futuristic pop project of Nat Ćmiel, has announced their fourth studio album Evangelic Girl is a Gun. Out on May 30 via Ninja Tune, the project follows 2022's softscars, one of our favorite albums of the year.
The album's new single “Skullcrusher” reveals yeule's newfound sonic focus on trip-hop and heavy metal textures. Unlike "Eko," the project's lead single which searched for a glossier pop moment, "Skullcrusher taps into an unabashedly noisier mood inspiredly equally by Massive Attack and The Frail-era Nine Inch Nails. Hear it in the music video below, directed by Neil Krug.
Ćmiel took inspiration from their practice as a painter in the creation of Evangelic Girl is a Gun, drawing influence from the Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. "For me, Beksiński portrays so beautifully, with utmost care, the entities that crawl through his dystopian, tranquil landscapes," yeule wrote in a press statement. The nature of painting as a medium is a reflection of my emotions, both violent and gentle. A fleeting moment of time in my life, transcribed with paint and trapped in time.”
