The last time a new episode of Euphoria aired it was February 2022. While gaps between seasons of TV have grown in recent years, the long wait for the popular and acclaimed HBO show to return feels different. With cast members Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Colman Domingo, and Sydney Sweeney all becoming A-listers in recent years and rumours of behind-the-scenes trouble running rampant, it’s easy to wonder whether the series will ever come back. Read on to find out what the latest is and when you can expect to see Rue, Cassie, Nate, and the rest of the gang back on our screens.

The good news is that yes, Euphoria will return for a third season. HBO announced in July 2024 that key cast members had signed on to return, with January 2025 eyed as the date they would begin filming.

The party line from HBO and creator Sam Levinson is that a combination of the 2023 writer’s strike and the availability of an in-demand cast caused major delays in getting a final set of scripts and a shooting schedule in place. Technically, the three years Euphoria has been off air is not that long. Hit shows like Severance and Andor both debuted in 2022 and returned this year after a three year gap between seasons.

Dig a little deeper, however, and it appears simple logistics are not the only issue affecting the production of Euphoria. A juicy 2024 Hollywood Reporter feature suggested there was tension between Zendaya and Levinson. A source involved with production alleged that Zendaya, who has appeared in Challengers and Dune 2 since Euphoria was last on air, demanded a meeting with the heads of HBO to know why they had allowed Levinson to make his ill-fated 2023 series The Idol while scripts for Euphoria remained unwritten. Her unhappiness was made worse when a whistleblower revealed troubling details about a toxic work environment on the set of The Idol, something she is said to have worried would have a knock-on effect for her as one of Levinson’s closest collaborators. “They went from being so close, and they couldn’t fix it,” said a source involved with the show about Zendaya and Levinson’s relationship.

Despite all of the speculation about delays and fallings out, Euphoria went into production in February 2025. HBO confirmed the start of production with a first-look image of Zendaya back in character as Rue.

Tragedy struck in 2023 when Angus Cloud, a.k.a the soulful drug dealer Fezco, died of an accidental overdose. The cast will also be missing Storm Reid, who plays Rue’s younger sister Gia Bennett. Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat, has also confirmed that she will no longer be part of the show. "After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character, Kat, I’m having to say a very teary-eyed goodbye," she wrote in a 2022 Instagram story. Fans had previously speculated that Ferreira and Levinson had fallen out after Kat’s screen time was notably reduced in the second season.

Yes. Rosalía and former NFL player Marshawn Lynch will appear in the new season, as will Sharon Stone. Their exact roles remain TBC but Rosalía recently spoke about being on set. “It’s my first job. I’m learning. I’m figuring it out,” she said at the 2025 Met Gala. “It’s been very inspiring to be with these amazing actors. It’s great.”

A slew of new names have also been announced as joining the Euphoria season 3 cast, such as Trisha Paytas, Natasha Lyonne, Danielle Deadwyler and Eli Roth. Other new cast members include: Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Toby Wallace, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Kadeem Hardison, Priscilla Delgado, James Landry Hébert, Anna Van Patten, Asante Blackk, Bella Podaras, Bill Bodner, Cailyn Rice, Colleen Camp, Gideon Adlon, Hemky Madera, Homer Gere, Jack Topalian, Jessica Blair Herman, Kwame Patterson, Madison Thompson, Matthew Willig, Rebecca Pidgeon and Sam Trammell.

Sam Levinson attended an HBO Max event in London on December 2nd, 2025, Variety reports, where he got surprisingly specific regarding what fans can expect this upcoming season.

Levinson shared that Euphoria season 3 picks up 5 years after the events of season two, after certain characters have graduated college. The decision was partially driven by narrative concerns, but was also rooted in the actual age of the cast: "The one thing we all agreed on is we can’t go back to high school — although many, many shows have had 30-year-old high school students, we’re not," Levinson said.

As for specific story lines, Levinson shared that season three finds Rue in Mexico, indebted to season two's iconically monotone drug dealer, Laurie, and looking for ways to pay off her balance. In addition, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Nate (Jacob Elordi) are married in the suburbs where Cassie spends her days enviously watching her high school classmates on social media. Meanwhile, Jules (Hunter Schafer) is in art school "“very nervous about having a career as a painter and trying to avoid responsibility at all costs.” Maddie (Alexa Demi) and Lexi (Maude Apatow) are both working in Hollywood, with Lexi working for a showrunner played by Sharon Stone.

HBO revealed that Euphoria season 3 is coming in April 2026 (with a specific date to be announced).
