Kacey Musgraves is back, and she's anointing her return with one her funniest songs yet.
The Deeper Well singer announced that her forthcoming album Middle of Nowhere will be out May 1. It will feature lead single "Dry Spell," which she shares today alongside a video she directed with Hannah Lux Davis.
The song explores the pain of a titular dry spell with Musgraves penning some very imagistic one-liners. "I'm so lonely, lonely with a capital 'H' / If you know what I mean / I've been sitting on the washing machine," she sings in the song's first verse. The chorus finds Musgraves yearning for a lover via a series of extended metaphors, relenting, "Ain't nobody's tool up in my shed / Ain't nobody's boots under my bed."
The video is similarly filled with winks and nods, as Musgraves walks around a super market and notices the subtle sensuality in the daily toil of grocery shopping.
Middle of Nowhere will features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov, and was produced by Musgraves's longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk.
Per a press release, Musgraves shares that the album is a "a sonic love letter to the musical borders of Country," intersecting with a diverse array of genres like bluegrass, pop, Norteño, and Zydeco. The cross-border musicality fits with the album's recording process, with session taking place between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico.
