The longstanding FADER Mix series presents new, exclusive DJ mixes from our favorite artists, DJs, and producers. This week, Montreal electronic artist and sonic philosopher Marie Davidson shares a journey of sounds and ideas.

Marie Davidson is a true original.

The Montreal artist has been releasing dance music that merges social commentary with sharp-edged synth production for over a decade. She brought a galvanizing class politics to the club space on 2018's funny and ferocious Working Class Woman and last year, she delivered a speaker-ready send up of the attention economy on City Of Clowns, one of The FADER's best albums of 2025.

In addition to being a musical artist, Davidson is a poet (with a book of original poetry, Traveler's Faith, on the way). Fittingly, Marie Davidson's FADER Mix feels like a found poem, with disparate clips of sonic material attached together, creating new meaning from striking contrast. On it, dramatic operatics descend into "Timeless" by The Weeknd and Playboi Carti. And Lana Del Rey's "White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter" melts into a screecher by Scottish brutalist KAVARI before the high concept art trap of Chino Amobi enters the space. While many mixes strive for seamlessness, Davidson makes the seams into a feature, provoking us to find a new musical poetics in the stitched and sutured.

What led you to start DJing?
Listening and collecting music.

What’s the first set you ever played?
It must have been in a bar called Casa Del Popolo in 2008.

What’s the most memorable set you’ve ever played?
Recording this mix last night.

What excites you about the future of nightlife?
Meeting new people.

What DJ trend needs to die?
All trends need to die so there’s more space for people to be themselves creatively. People follow trends to stay in fashion, or to feel included in movements. I don’t really relate to that, I just like searching and doing my own thing.

How would you describe your FADER mix?
It’s a very emotional mix. I wanted to bring people on a trip. It’s a reflection and a commentary on the current times.

Where did you record the mix? Describe your surroundings.
I recorded this mix in my studio, in the Montreal winter. I locked myself up and didn’t talk to anyone for 3 days.

Beyond DJing and music, what's an interest you have that may surprise people?
I have a strong interest for outsiders and outlaws, people who live in the margins of society.
