One Chicago music fan's wide ranging collection of live concert recordings has been organized for the public's listening pleasure.
Adam Jacobs, an avid concertgoer and once casual, later committed, concert archivist, began recording the concerts he attended in 1984 to tape. He went on to record over 10,000 concerts, the Associated Press reports, including shows with Nirvana, Tracy Chapman, Dinosaur Jr., Wilco, R.E.M., Phish, and early hip-hop trailblazers Boogie Down Productions.
In 2023, a volunteer with the Internet Archive, who read about Jacobs's collection, reached out to suggest he digitize the tapes and post them on the Archive for posterity. Now a group of volunteers have further organized those uploads, which are available to stream here.
Though AP reports that Jacobs is no longer an active concertgoer due to health challenges, thousands of fans have gotten to step into his shoes and experience these historic concerts from the mid-1980s onwards. Listen to the archive here.
