Still from KARLEE GIRL's "Right Back!" music video
“Right back right back right back, aye!”
If you’re chronically online, and on a niche subset of “Stan Twitter,” you’ve likely been inundated with videos of Dream Academy-alum KARLEE GIRL’s (Karlee Tanaka) March release “Right Back!”
It all started with an early April post on X that highlighted Tanaka as one of “the best soloists to come out of dream academy.” (Dream Academy is the reality show that produced KATSEYE, alongside ADELA and the girls of the forthcoming girl group, Prelude.) That initial post spurred a wave of intrigue and content that spanned from euphoric adoration to seemingly ironic brainrot stan content about the viral single, and soon after, a real boost in streams.
The song and video are reminiscent of yesteryear summer anthems like Doja Cat’s 2019 hit “Say So” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”
It’s a sunny mish-mash of hip-hop, R&B, and pop influences, and features an earwormy chorus that repeats its title over again, followed by a punctuating “aye.” (Cue hand clap and bob swing). Its simple video shows KARLEE GIRL dancing by the pool and eating Hawaiian delicacies (Spam Musubi). It gained additional meme potential due to Karlee Girl rocking the internet’s favored hair style, the bob (which she’s been playing up on TikTok with her “bobography”).
There are many factors fueling the meme. One undeniable reason is the generally dour vibe within the KATSEYE fandom, with many unsettled by KATSEYE member Manon’s hiatus and which many observers speculate is a permanent severance. As fans parse the truth of Manon’s status, and (like The FADER’s critics) debate KATSEYE’s divisive new hard techno pop track, “PINKY UP,” a familiar (and unscandalized) face from Dream Academy is understandably welcome.
There’s also the unstoppable energy of stan twitter and its penchant for turning anything into a surrealist meme. Like the philosophically dense term “Tate Endings (which The FADER explained in January), KARLEE GIRL and “Right Back!” are becoming a new kind of inside joke, with users playing up every aspect of the KARLEE GIRL phenomenon, and shoehorning her into every random discourse and topic. One user has named her the “twitter artist of the year.”
With streams rising and “Right Back!” cracking a million on Spotify, it seems that KARLEE GIRL may be moving from niche discourse to a genuine new star from the Dream Academy universe. Regardless of what happens, “Right back right back, aye,” will be ringing in our head for a very long time.
