Engine DJ just dropped version 5.0 of its software, and the big one is on-board stems rendering for the RANE SYSTEM ONE, no laptop required. DJs can now render 4-part stems directly on the hardware, pulling apart vocals, drums, bass, and melody without opening a computer.

Stems separation has been around for a minute. Serato, rekordbox, and Traktor all have some version of it. But those setups still depend on a computer to do the heavy lifting. The SYSTEM ONE, which made noise earlier this year as a standalone unit with motorized platters, can now handle stems processing internally. You can pre-render tracks through Engine DJ Desktop, or render them directly on the SYSTEM ONE. Tracks can keep playing while they render, and the system can process multiple tracks and playlists at once.

If you’ve ever hauled a laptop to a bar gig or a warehouse party where there was barely room for a drink, you might get why this matters. Beyond stems, the 5.0 update fills in a few workflow gaps. RGB waveforms, the color-coded visual style that maps frequency content across the display, were previously a SYSTEM ONE exclusive. Now they’re available across Engine DJ hardware. Star ratings can also be added to tracks directly on the unit. There are also new 32-beat Reverb Rise and Reverb Drop options and a cleaned-up Source Screen.

Engine DJ 5.0 is available now as a free download through Engine DJ Desktop and directly on supported hardware over Wi-Fi or wired connection.
