The Durutti Column, the profoundly influential project of English musician and guitarist Vini Reilly, is returning with its first album in 15 years. RENASCENT, created with Reilly's longtime collaborator and Keir Stewart, will be released on July 31.
According to a press release, the upcoming album could very well be the group's final record. Reilly, who's now 72, suffered a series of strokes in 2010 and in the years since has largely kept away from the press. In 2023, he agreed to a rare interview with The Guardian in which he discussed his life-long battle with depression and mental health, revealing the physical and emotional toll the strokes took on his mind and body. “I carried on and on after my strokes and I got to a level, but it’s not even close [to where I was],” Reilly told The Guardian. “I really can’t play guitar. It looks ridiculous. It sounds ridiculous. I’ve got a good excuse to stop now because I’ve got arthritis all down here."
The Durutti Column formed in the 1980s and gained recognition for Reilly's guitar virtuoso and the atmospheric and psychedelic sound of their music. In recent years, the group and music has been cited as influences by a swath of popular musicians from Harry Styles and Blood Orange, to Yung Lean and Brian Eno, who once called The Durutti Column's LC his favorite record.
