Lil Nas X updated the world on the state of his mental health and his music career in a lengthy video posted on Instagram Wednesday morning, June 17.

The rapper and pop artist shared that he's been in rehab treatment, is seeing a therapist, and told fans that he received a diagnosis for Bipolar Disorder. "I didn't want to admit [I had bipolar disorder] because I didn't want to take medication and have people think differently [of me]," he said.

That being said, things appear to be on the up for Lil Nas X, who's known for always leading with humor in his work and words. Throughout the video he flashed a smile, even as he was delivering the serious life update. "I'm already Black and gay. Like, Damn, God: Black, gay, bipolar — I'm living life on extreme hard mode," he joked, adding that he's feeling better, "creating more freely," and noted that his treatment and the quiet time has been "helpful."

He also shared that he's working on new music, though he cautioned that it may take some time. "I'm not getting completely to that just yet," he said. "But I'm excited to do that and I'm excited to go on that journey with you guys."

Lil Nas X (Montero Lamar Hill) has been lying low since an arrest in August of last year that led to him facing three felony assault charges. The charges came in relation to a highly documented August 21, 2025 incident that saw him walking the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles wearing underwear and a pair of cowboy boots. He was reportedly taken to a hospital following his arrest for a suspected overdose.

Rolling Stone reported in April that Lamar Hill was granted mental health diversion in the case, and that if he continued with treatment related to his Bipolar Disorder that his case would be dismissed.

"'Montourage,'" Lamar Hill shared in his June 17 Instagram video, addressing his fan community by his favored nickname. "We've been through so much together. Thank you guys for holding it down."
