French DJ Kavinsky found dead in Paris apartment from suspected stroke

Electro-house icon Kavinsky has died at his Paris apartment. He was 50 years old.

Per initial reporting by Le Figaro, authorities suspect Kavinsky suffered a stroke on Tuesday, July 28. The French DJ born Vincent Belorgey was perhaps best known for his work on soundtracks including Drive as well as touring with Daft Punk, Justice, and SebastiAn. Early reports indicate the musician had been suffering headaches in the days leading up to his passing.

Kavinsky performed at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics two years ago, remixing his breakout hit "Nightcall" with Phoenix and ANGELE. His last official release was a remix of "Outsider" last summer with Donald Durand.

This morning's news sparked memorials from French President Emanuel Macron and The Weeknd, the latter of whom collaborated with the DJ on "Odd Look," a new wave standout from Kavinsky's 2013 debut album Outrun. On Twitter, The Weeknd described Kavinsky as, "An inspiration to so many, including myself. I will continue to honor your name and your music."

Back in the late 2000s, A-Trak had a monthly column for The FADER. Kavinsky made a cameo in the November 2008 edition of "Around The World," where A-Trak described him as, "[...] my wacky neighbor. He lives 5 minutes away, we'll just hit each other up like "lunch? Yeah" and we always go to the same restaurant." A-Trak also admired his fellow DJ's tech-forward mindset: "Kavinsky has more iPhone apps than anyone I know (I strongly recommend the Koi Pond, you can thank him later)."
