VirtualDJ now supports OneLibrary, the cross-brand music library format that AlphaTheta launched with a group of hardware and software partners last October, the company announced.
In practice, that means DJs who manage their collections in VirtualDJ can export them to a USB drive in the OneLibrary format and load them directly onto compatible players. Playlists, hot cue points, and beatgrid data carry over. The hardware list at launch is the CDJ-3000X, CDJ-1500X, XDJ-AZ, XDJ-AN, OPUS-QUAD, and OMNIS-DUO.
The announcement matters because of what DJ prep has looked like for most of the last two decades: rekordbox for Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta gear, and a separate library in whatever laptop software you actually play on, with cues and grids rebuilt by hand whenever you switch. OneLibrary is AlphaTheta's attempt to make that go away by standardizing the metadata layer so one library reads the same across brands.
VirtualDJ is a meaningful addition to that list. The software, made by Atomix Productions, has been around since 1996 and was one of the first programs to make DJing on a computer viable at all, long before it was standard.
"DJs shouldn't have to adapt to technology. Technology should adapt to DJs," Atomix CEO Stephane Clavel said in a statement. "That's why VirtualDJ has always prioritized openness and compatibility, enabling DJs to use any hardware, any format, and any workflow without friction."
AlphaTheta says it will keep working to expand OneLibrary adoption across the industry.
